Interactive Learning Resource Topic: Developing a Growth Mindset

Identify components of the Interactive Learning Resource that might be missing (e.g., appropriate outcomes, alignment, interactivity, inclusivity, technology use and rationale, presentation, grammar, spelling, citations, etc.).

Your interactive learning resource is great! I think the chosen use of experiential and cooperative learning methods will be very effective in fostering a growth mindset among the students. However, there may still be areas that need attention to ensure that the learning experience is effective and inclusive, here are some possible considerations. 

Access to technology: While  students can use their phones to access Moodle, it’s important to ensure that all students have access to the necessary technology and reliable connection to participate fully in the lessons. The school may need to provide devices and internet access for students who lack them. 

Inclusivity: It’s important to ensure that all students feel valued and included in the learning process. This could involve providing opportunities for different learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and abilities, and making sure that the materials and activities are accessible to all students.

Example: In Lesson 3,  My Mindset and Identifying Limiting Beliefs, you may have a student who does not feel comfortable participating in group discussion. I suggest creating an option for a learner to partake in the activity, however, submit their reflection privately to the instructor instead of sharing it with the class. You could also offer one-on-one discussions with the student to discuss their mindset and limiting beliefs, rather than requiring them to participate in the discussion. It’s important to create a safe and inclusive learning environment where all students feel comfortable and supported in their learning.

Provide a summary of The Interactive Learning Resources strengths and weaknesses. Draw out specific examples from your peers’ work to justify your feedback.

The resource is very well-organized, engaging, and provides a variety of different approaches to learning that will resonate with students. Furthermore, I like that the Moodle platform provides a centralized location for students to access materials, submit assignments, and take quizzes, making it easy for both students and instructors to manage the learning process. I think all of the topics covered in the resource are relevant and important for students when developing a growth mindset.

One significant disadvantage is the resource’s heavy reliance on technology, which may not be accessible to all students. The resource may not provide enough opportunities for individualized feedback and support from instructors, especially in online learning environments where students may have limited interaction with their instructors. Lasty, I found that it does not address the cultural and individual differences in mindset, which with the given topic may require different approaches to be effective for different learning types.

Provide general, specific, and practical recommendations to your peers on how to improve their Interactive Learning Resource.

As a general recommendation, I would look to provide immediate and personalized feedback to learners after they complete each activity or quiz. This will help your learners understand what they got right or wrong and where they need to improve. You’ve done an outstanding job at making your interactive learning resource user-friendly, it is easy to navigate and use. The instructions are clear and concise, so I think learners will easily find the information they need. I would potentially look at finding real-world examples to use, illustrating the  key concepts that your teaching may make the content more relatable to your learners. Lastly, Incorporating individualized feedback and support for students, such as having office hours or one-on-one meetings, to address any specific concerns or questions they may have. Overall, you’ve done an excellent job, this was extremely difficult to critique as your learning resource has been very well put together. Sign me up as a student of the growth mindset course!

Interaction

For our selected learning blueprint; A High School Physical and Mental Health and Wellness Program. I’ve selected a video by Psych Hub (2020) that focuses on the connection between physical and mental health. The video will have students think about how physical and mental health are intertwined, and question how poor physical health can have a negative impact on mental health and vice versa. This short video touches on the essential questions for our chosen topic and segments the importance of self-care practices for both physical and mental health, such as eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and practicing techniques like meditation and deep breathing (Psych Hub, 2020). One activity that could be suggested after watching the video is to have students create a personal self-care plan that addresses both their physical and mental health needs. Students could create a chart or a list of activities that they can do to promote their physical health, such as exercising, eating healthy, and getting enough sleep, as well as activities that they can do to promote their mental health, such as practicing mindfulness, seeking support from friends and family, or engaging in a creative hobby (Psych Hub, 2020). This would help students develop their knowledge and skills related to the topic and identify personalized strategies that work for them individually. It would also help students develop skills related to setting goals and creating a plan to achieve them. To provide feedback on the self-care plan activity, we could use various mediums or technologies depending on communication needs. In-person feedback can be employed if we are in the same location, while written feedback may be provided if it is an online program. We could use video feedback, or utilize online platforms like google classroom for the submission and receipt of feedback. The key is to ensure that feedback is provided in a timely and constructive manner to support the students’ learning and development.

Designing for Inclusion

When designing a learning blueprint with consideration of inclusion we must start by developing a plan to make education more accessible and equitable for all students, regardless of their background, ability level, or identity. This involves understanding the unique needs or differences of learners, and creating a supportive environment, while providing quality instruction and regularly evaluating and improving outcomes. An example may include providing assistive technology, such as screen readers or text to speech software, or offering one on one support services such as tutoring or counseling services. When creating our learning design blueprint for a highschool physical health and wellness program. We must take careful consideration of the potential barriers to student learning and success. Incorporating diverse perspectives, accommodating students with different needs, and encouraging collaboration and discussion are key elements in planning to reduce or eliminate barriers to learners’ achievement. The use of multi-modal materials and resources should be used, such as a mix of traditional and digital methods, including textbooks, videos, podcasts, or interactive simulations. This variety will ensure that different learning styles and abilities are catered to. Additionally, the resources used should represent a range of perspectives, cultures, and identities. For instance, when discussing our segment on nutrition, including foods from different cultures and highlighting the importance of having diverse diets. Accommodations should also be provided for students with disabilities or differing learning needs. Examples include closed captioning videos, large print materials, or extended time for an assignment. This will ensure that all students have equal opportunities to learn and participate in the class. Furthermore, creating a sense of community through encouraging collaboration and discussion among students helps to ensure all voices are heard. Providing students with opportunities to work together and share their ideas and experiences can create a stronger learning environment for our design. Lastly, regularly evaluating and adjusting the effectiveness of the instructional material is important. Feedback from students should be taken into account and changes should be made to ensure that the class is engaged and learning effectively.

Learning Design II

Experiential learning is a teaching method that encourages students to gain knowledge and skills through firsthand experience. This approach encourages learners to actively interact with the material by taking part in hands-on activities, and simulated exercises. Through exploring, reflecting, and connecting their experiences, learners can gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter. This approach is widely used in educational settings, but can also be applied to workplace training, as well as personal development. I think this learning method would align effectively with our chosen topic of health promotion for physical and mental well being. When teaching about physical and mental wellness using the experiential approach, learners would be encouraged to engage with the material through hands-on activities that allow them to explore their physical and mental health. This could include mindfulness activities such as yoga, meditation, and other physical activities that may help learners become aware of their bodies and how they can practice self-care. We could also have learners explore topics such as nutrition, exercise, and stress management through activities like cooking, journaling, or participating in a social media detox. Reflection is also an important part of experiential learning, as it allows learners to process their experiences and make connections between them. Through this approach, learners can develop strategies for improving their physical and mental wellbeing, and recognize the importance of health promotion. It is important for us to track the learner and document their progress. This could be done through observations of the activities, assessments of the learners knowledge and skills, as well as regular check-ins to assess their understanding. Additionally, learners could be asked to keep a journal to document their experiences, feelings, and reflections. This can help to measure progress and ensure that they are understanding the material. Lastly, it is important for us to provide feedback to the learners in order to help them understand their strengths and weaknesses, as well as to provide guidance and support.

Motivation, Learning, and Theory

Growing up as an individual that has competed in several different sporting arenas, I was surrounded by coaches with different philosophies, methods and approaches to motivating me as an athlete. I had one coach in particular that was able to instill a sense of drive, determination, and confidence in my ability to learn new skills, take on challenges, and reach my goals. How were they able to inflame that desire to become my best every single day? In this post I will reflect on readings describing theories of learning, and motivation, relating to my own personal experience. Based on my understanding of the article, the behaviorist teaching method focuses on the idea that learning is a result of stimulus and response. This approach emphasizes the use of rewards and positive reinforcement to shape behavior. For instance, a teacher rewards a student with a sticker for completing their homework on time. In the sporting arena, my coach had adopted this same strategy in the form of extrinsic motivation. By creating incentives for us to reach our goals this method was made evident. For example, the ability to be promoted to team captain. Or negatively, threatening to bench a player, or have them dropped from the team. The cognitivist teaching method focuses on the idea that learning is a result of mental process. This method emphasizes the use of problem-solving and critical thinking to help students learn. Such as, a teacher having students work in groups to solve a complex problem. Therefore, the cognitive coaching process focuses on identifying an athlete’s goals, strengths, and development needs, and planning to meet those needs through structured learning practices. In my own experience, I’ve found that I’m intrinsically motivated, and driven by the desire to learn and develop new skills. The need to feel efficient and develop meaningful relations with others on the team was imperative to my learning process. I now understand that the working environment is key to making a team or student a happy and motivated one. In athletics, this starts when a player shows up for a training session, they should feel a surge of energy hit them. My coach was able to identify these needs and foster an environment that allowed for this learning style to be met. Lastly, the constructivist teaching method focuses on the idea that learning is a result of knowledge from past experiences. This method creates situations in which the students will question their own understanding and builds on what they already know. The constructivists’ position asserts that the transfer of learning occurs through practice, knowledge, and concept. An example of this would be allowing students to teach one another. Learners then pose their own questions and seek answers to these questions through research and direct observation.
